Discovering Employees’ Individual Motivators

Engaging and motivating employees can be a frustrating task.

Many managers and/or supervisors often overlook the need to keep their employees motivated.

It’s not about the ‘how’ – it’s about the ‘why’

Different things motivate people. It’s just a matter of determining why they’re motivated.

Each staff member on your team has his or her own individual reasons. Your role as a leader is to ensure that those reasons are understood and then utilized to maintain the level of engagement that is required to complete the responsibilities of the role they’re being tasked to complete.

Having clear and open communication with your team can help support and utilize their true individual motivational indicators.

A few suggestions on how to do this are:

• Host one-on-one weekly, bi-weekly or monthly meetings

• Host weekly department meetings to review projects and/or roadblocks

• Keep an open door policy so your employees/staff feel confident to discuss opinions and/or issues with you directly as they occur

These suggestions can lead your team to make conscious and productive decisions so that they are more engaged with their work and motivated to complete the tasks they’ve been assigned.
